What four? The fears of guilt, shame, punishment, and going to a bad place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And what, mendicants, is the fear of guilt? It\u2019s when someone reflects: \u2018If I were to do bad things by way of body, speech, and mind, wouldn\u2019t I blame myself for my conduct?\u2019 Being afraid of guilt, they give up bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and develop good conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, keeping themselves pure. This is called the fear of guilt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And what, mendicants, is the fear of shame? It\u2019s when someone reflects: \u2018If I were to do bad things by way of body, speech, and mind, wouldn\u2019t others blame me for my conduct?\u2019 Being afraid of shame, they give up bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and develop good conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, keeping themselves pure. This is called the fear of shame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And what, mendicants, is the fear of punishment? It\u2019s when someone sees that the kings have arrested a bandit, a criminal, and subjected them to various punishments\u2014 whipping, caning, and clubbing; cutting off hands or feet, or both; cutting off ears or nose, or both; the \u2018porridge pot\u2019, the \u2018shell-shave\u2019, the \u2018demon\u2019s mouth\u2019, the \u2018garland of fire\u2019, the \u2018burning hand\u2019, the \u2018grass blades\u2019, the \u2018bark dress\u2019, the \u2018antelope\u2019, the \u2018meat hook\u2019, the \u2018coins\u2019, the \u2018caustic pickle\u2019, the \u2018twisting bar\u2019, the \u2018straw mat\u2019; being splashed with hot oil, being fed to the dogs, being impaled alive, and being beheaded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They think: \u2018If I were to do the same kind of bad deed, the kings would punish me in the same way.\u2019 \u2026 Being afraid of punishment, they don\u2019t steal the belongings of others. They give up bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and develop good conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, keeping themselves pure. This is called the fear of punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And what, mendicants, is the fear of rebirth in a bad place? It\u2019s when someone reflects: \u2018Bad conduct of body, speech, or mind has a bad result in the next life. If I were to do such bad things, when my body breaks up, after death, I\u2019d be reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.\u2019 Being afraid of rebirth in a bad place, they give up bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and develop good conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, keeping themselves pure.
